City College of San Francisco was founded in 1935 to fight Depression-era unemployment and juvenile delinquency; in turn, CCSF proved to make a massive impact on the city of San Francisco, becoming a crucial part of technical and career education in the Bay Area.

Its original nickname, Trolly-Car College, reflected its scattered campuses, but by providing opportunity to people across the growing city of San Francisco, City College established a life-changing, urban presence. With some of the nation’s most beautiful public artworks (including works by Diego Rivera and Frederick Olmsted), CCSF is the heart of San Francisco – practical education for the people.

City College of San Francisco continues to ensure educational opportunity and access for all of San Francisco’s people. With San Francisco’s prominence in the modern tech economy, the city is rapidly becoming unaffordable for ordinary people, so to combat gentrification and increase access, CCSF made the bold step in 2017 to offer free tuition to any California resident living in San Francisco.

In less than a year, enrollment increased dramatically (16%), and the initiative is proving to be one of the most important experiments in American higher culture. City College of San Francisco means to show that when the people are given the opportunity, they will do great things.

Home buying and selling can be a very fast-paced industry – a house can sell within hours or even minutes. With the right tools at your fingertips you will be able to outwit and win good deals.

If You’re Buying

If you are a buyer, then you will want to take these things into consideration.

Find a lender. Before you start working with a bank, mortgage banker, mortgage broker or credit union, get as much information about them as you can. Check their backgrounds carefully. Also, get an estimate of all possible fees.

Don’t over commit yourself. There are some things that you can take care of for the buyer, but others that you cannot. Learn to be flexible and to negotiate.

Stay within your financial reach. Make sure you never go for something that is so high or right around your income level, but rather something that is 25–30% lower than your income, so that if there is ever a draw back on your financial status you’ll still be able to afford it.

As you might expect in a language learning company, almost everyone who works at Babbel is multilingual. I say almost because I’m not one of them (yet). Like many native English speakers, my attempts to learn a second language in school were in vain. I have now reached an intermediate conversational level in German, but it’s nothing compared to my international colleagues. Every day I hear people walking around the office speaking dozens of different languages, code switching in conversations with different colleagues, and translating their funny idioms into English. But even among the serial language learners at Babbel, you’ll never find someone poring over French 101 textbooks, cramming themselves to fluency.

That’s because the central principle of the Babbel language learning approach is that people should spend about 20 minutes per day studying a new language. This is surprisingly short compared to the length of time university students are expected to study a language nightly (~90 minutes). So how are people at Babbel picking up new languages even though they’re putting in less time than I spent cramming Spanish verb conjugation in high school? I sat down with one of Babbel’s linguistic experts, Karoline Schnur, to find out how 20 minutes of learning per day is all you need to become proficient in a new language.
