Senate to sanction contractors of
abandoned NDDC projects
The Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Company on Wednesday threatened to sanction defaulting contractors after inspecting abandoned projects valued at N21.05bn in Imo State, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The committee, led by its Chairman, Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi, called on defaulting contractors to return to site or face sanctions.
Nwaoboshi told reporters that their oversight functions also covered NDDC projects in Niger Delta states.
He said the visit to the states had afforded them the opportunity to assess the performance of the NDDC in the states.
“It has also enabled us to know the needs of the people of the state, so as to capture their interest in the NDDC’s 2016 budget.Nwaoboshi said, “This visit has given us the opportunity to see for ourselves, whether the NDDC programmes had really affected the lives of the people of Niger Delta or not.
“The NDDC was instituted to better the lot of Niger Delta people, irrespective of party affiliation.”
He added, “The committee will use all within its powers to ensure that all the contractors return to site or be ready to face the wrath of the law.
“Consultants are looking into the projects. We call on all the contractors who have collected money to go back to site. The committee may be forced to use security agents to recover the money of the abandoned projects.
“The committee may also be forced to organise a public hearing on the issue of NDDC abandoned projects in states.”
NAN reports that some of the projects visited by the committee were the 9.9km road at Umulowo Obowo awarded in 2004.
