New militant group, Niger Delta Avengers on Thursday, May 12, 2016 revealed a glimpse into the group’s ultimate goal – a free Niger Delta Republic for the South South and South East regions of Nigeria.
According to a press statement by the militant group, published on its website, the Niger Delta Avengers warned that if their demands were not met at the end of the two-week ultimatum, it would blow up all the oil installations in the region. “So, just shut down your operations and leave,” the statement signed by the group’s spokesperson, Colonel Mudoch Agbinibo said.
The 1,750-word statement titled, “Congrats to All Strike Teams of the Niger Delta Avengers’, details what it regarded as injustice for the oil located in the Niger Delta. It listed oil blocs in the region and its owners which appears to show that 90% of the oil blocs in the region belong to Northerners and wondered if the rumoured oil discovered in the North East could be owned by people from the Niger Delta.
The group called on all international oil companies, indigenous oil firms and contractors to shun anyone who ever calls for any reason saying he is a member of the group and making demands that are not in tune with the objective of the Delta Avengers.
The statement said that the aim of the group is far beyond threatening lives of Nigerians but it’s aim is agitating for the total freedom and liberation of the Niger Delta people and making them have control over their resources.
“No agent or representative of the Avenger has called the minister of state for petroleum resources and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, group managing director, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu to threaten his life.
“To all international oil companies, indigenous oil companies and all contractors, if anyone called saying they are members of Avenger, please do not listen or take them serious because our ideology and belief is far from that,” the spokesman said.
The statement further warned that should the federal government fail to meet their demands the Delta Avengers will continue to blow up the pipelines until the Nigerian economy is brought to level zero, saying as at present, it has recorded 50 percent success, but praying that in no distant time, it will record 100 percent, thereby crippling the economic base of Nigeria.
It also said by October 2016, it will display its currency, flag, passport, ruling and its territory to the world.
It called on the United Nations to join the liberation voice of the Niger Delta and free the people from the environmental pollution, slavery, and oppression of the government of Nigeria.
“We want a country that will turn the creeks of the Niger Delta to a tourism heaven, a country that will achieve its full potentials, a country that will make health care system accessible to everyone.
“With Niger Delta still under the country Nigeria we can’t make it possible. So we are calling on Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations and all heads of the government of the five Permanent Security Council members to come to the aid of Niger Delta people.
“We are calling on world leaders to come to the Niger Delta to see the atrocities being committed by the Nigerian government”, insisting that “now is the time for the liberation of the people of the region”.
The militant group listed oil blocs in the Niger Delta region of the country and their alleged owners. The group threatened the owners who include former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, former military head of state, Ibrahim Babangida, vice president, Atiku Abubakar, minister of defence, Theophilus Danjuma, ex-minister of petroleum, Rilwanu Lukman and several others with a two-week ultimatum to shut down operations and evacuate the workers on the oil fields.
The group listed the following oil assets in the region and their owners:
Apo Well awarded to Sapetro Oil owned by Gen Theophilus Y Danjuma. Apo field is capable of producing 300,000 barrels per day and
