The Senator representing Anambra North senatorial district in the National Assembly, Sen Stella Oduah has called on the Federal Government to establish an inland container port in Onitsha, Anambra State, just as she said that the port will yield a daily turnover of over N6.9 billion.

Sen. Oduah in an interview with journalists in Abuja yesterday said that the establishment of the port was very necessary especially as Nigeria was focusing to alternative revenue generation and economic diversification.
The law maker who is Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs noted  that with the establishment of the port, commerce in Onitsha and the entire South East region would grow at tremendous levels.
She said “Onitsha is nucleus to the economic growth of South East: potentially, Onitsha market has a daily turnover of N6.9 billion, there is no market in the sub-Saharan region that has this amount of turnover.
With the crowd and the resource that goes into it, if we do not create that venue where they can have direct global access then we are not helping the growth of that economy.
For them to have easy access to international market they must have an outlet, to have an outlet they must have a route: the inland container port would address that.
If we must have a bottom up holistic economic growth, the regional economy must be encouraged to grow so people will dwell on what they do best.
If we are going to be re-exporting like Dubai, it means that we can develop the technology, we can assemble and we can re-export”
She further stated “I think government should give its teeth to the establishment of an Inland Container Port in Onitsha just as we have in Kano and I think the sky would be the limits.
