No fewer than 35 persons died and 176 others injured in auto accidents in Anambra State between January and May this year.
The Anambra State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Sunday Ajayi, disclosed this in an interactive session with journalists on Thursday, in Awka, the state capital.
“This report may not be comprehensive because there maybe others that happened without our knowledge and, therefore, not recorded.”He said, “Within January and May 2016, we have recorded 85 auto accidents in Anambra State out of which 26 were fatal. Thirty-five persons were killed in the crashes and 176 were injured.
He said the number of auto accidents so far this year was a reasonable reduction from the record of accidents in the state in 2015.
Ajayi said the command was working towards reducing further the number of auto accidents in the state.
The sector commander added that most of the auto accidents on Nigerian roads were caused by speeding.
He said the use of speed limiters proposed by the corps would help to reduces crashes.
Ajayi, who noted that speeding accounted for 60 per cent of auto accidents in Nigeria, stressed that with the use of speed limiters, accidents on the roads would be reduced significantly.
He solicited the support of the media to sensitise the people on the need to abide by highway codes and other road safety measures.
