Twenty-three students of the Kwara State University, Malete, have bagged first-class degrees.
The Vice-Chancellor, KWASU, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, stated this during a pre-convocation media briefing in Malete, on Tuesday.
Na’Allah decried the inability of universities and other tertiary institutions in the country to solve Nigeria’s developmental challenges. He said the 23 students would be awarded their degrees along with other graduates during the oncoming convocation of the university.
He stated that if the tertiary institutions had been effective in their functions as research centres, they would have foreseen and proffered solutions to the insecurity and socio-economic problems of the country.
He urged them to wake up to their responsibilities even as he urged government to give tertiary institutions the required support.
He said a permanent delegate of Nigeria to UNESCO, Maryam Katagun, would deliver KWASU’s convocation lecture.
According to him, the current fall in the revenues of all tiers of government was affecting tertiary institutions in the country.
The VC said tertiary institutions should collaborate with government at all tiers to address the challenges of the country.
He also said it was needful to categorise universities in the country according to their efficiency, research ability and academic performance.
He urged the government to invest more in university education in the country.
