President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday urged the country’s ivory towers to contribute significantly to diversifying the nation’s economy, especially with the decreasing revenues from oil.
The universities, alongside the National Universities Commission, Buhari noted, should develop new benchmarks in the tourism and hospitality industry as well as in management to impact positively on the nation’s economy and its people.
The President stated this during the last segment of the 48th convocation ceremonies of the University of Lagos.
Buhari, who was represented by the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, challenged the universities to engage in teaching, research and community services that would affect their immediate environments and the nation as a whole. The event also witnessed the installation of the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar El-Kanemi, as the chancellor of the university as well as the award of doctoral degrees to 71 persons.
According to him, the nation’s universities, like their counterparts across the world, should play critical roles in the realisation of national development goals and actualisation of policies.
