The head coach of Nigeria’s U-23 team, Samson Siasia, has stated that the non-availability of invited overseas-based players for the Rio Olympic Games “will not hinder the team’s preparations.”
The U-23 Eagles are already in Atlanta, USA, intensifying preparations ahead of the games, but the likes of Mikel Obi, Godfrey Oboabona, Kenneth Omeruo and Moses Simon are yet to report to camp.
According to the media officer of the team, Timi Ebikagboro, who spoke via Twitter handle, Siasia said the team will proceed with their preparations and will not allow the non-arrival of the overseas-based players to dampen the spirit in camp.
Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi, South Africa-based goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi and Watford striker Odion Ighalo were included in Siasia’s squad as the three overage players for Nigeria.
Also included was Manchester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho. Sadly, noen of these players are in camp and, according to Manchester City, Iheanacho would not be on the plane to Rio.
