Interview: Nigeria has the measure of Boko Haram

Information minister tells Al Jazeera the country's army have decimated Boko Haram's ability to launch big attacks.

Nigeria is on top of its security problems and Boko Haram has been hobbled ahead of elections in the oil-rich River State region, according to Information Minister Lai Mohammed.
Mohammed said the army had significantly reduced Boko Haram's ability to carry out big attacks, just days after a suspected suicide attack by the group on a mosque left 22 worshippers dead in the northeastern Maiduguri city.

"The government is on top of the situation in terms of security and I think Nigeria has done really well," Mohammed said in an interview with Al Jazeera on Saturday.
"The Boko Haram insurgency has been massively decimated to the extent that it is no longer in the position to carry out spectacular attacks."
Referring to the attack in Maiduguri, Mohammed said there was a difference between lone-wolf attacks and large-scale ones.
"Before these villagers [in Maiduguri] were under the control of Boko Haram insurgents ... today they have been dislodged. Now they're attacking soft targets, which is what happens with a insurgency on its way out."

Oil crisis
Mohammed also told Al Jazeera that his government saw the current low oil prices as an opportunity to diversify its economy. Nigeria has proven oil reserves of more than 37 billion barrels and a daily output of more than two million, according to OPEC.
In February, it entered talks with the World Bank for a loan to shore up its finances after oil prices fell to below $30 a barrel.
The current price of per barrel stands at just above $40, still significantly lower than average prices in 2014 of above $110.
Mohammed became information minister after President Muhammadu Buhari won elections last year.

It shall be well for Nigeria. All we need is repentance, Restitution and Righteousness through faith in Jesus and God will lift Nigeria to higher level. As you pray for Nigeria don't forget to confess the sins of the Nation.

He who spit the sky dirty his face. This government is above you all because is one of the legitimate government Nigeria ever had. No matter what is our choice not an imposed government as it used to be. Haters have done and will continue to do everything for its failure. Rest assure you; you are and you will be wasting your time trying to bring it down but I guaranteed you will end of in melancholy and hypertension

@David Olu and Jude Ezirim, yu guys need to bury your head in shame. It is only those blinded by religious and ethnic bigotry that will deny the fact that PM has done credibly well in bringing Boko Haram to its knees. The sae B that held territories and hoisted their flag during GEJis no longer a quarter powerful now.

Also, in the area of fighting corruption, apart from actively going after those criminals (Dasuki, Metuh, Badeh, Amosun, etc) who stole us blind to make sure they pay for their crimes, this regime has not recorded a singe allegation of corruption against any cabinet ember. An I am sure it will remain so throughout PMB's time because anyone who may be thinking I that line knows what awaits him at he president's hands.

We just have to thanks our stars for throwing out the IB who could only look on when his fellow buffoons were stealing us blind. Never Again shall Nigeria allow someone as incompetent and ineffective as Jonathan lead us. NEVER AGAIN!

Every body should know that Buhari bring allot of bad luck to Nigeria, just immediately he came in, oil price went down to the lowest cost, why, because he is abadluck man, the bllod of people he killed in 2011 and still killing are not happy with him, he can't show any good example to Nigeria, he don't deserve to rule that country, he is a badluck to us. All his dealings are fails, lies and deceisive, bliding Nigerians and traveling every minutes without coming with good news, Buhari is one of the Boko-Haram but he failed his agreement with Boko-Haram.  Nigerians should be wise and vote wisely, Nigerians should stop tribal voting if they want good for that country. Also, this Li Muhammed who come here to deceive people, why don't he relocate to Maidugri to live for at least 2 weeks and if he survive it, we will then believe him. Stop deceiving Nigerians,

I think those are critical about the present government are not fair to history. If a government in the past by its own action and deed agreed that there were members of BH in their government and the present event trailing the arms deal and other ineptness had shown that the likes of Badeh, Dasuki and others who wished that their fellow brothers in the North -East are exterminated with Badeh Village inclusive while they keep their fat bank accounts with sheer corruptness shows that the government of GEJ - was a sheer jamboree and not a government meant to do for the people what they cannot do for themselves. Enugu - Onitsha road is an extension of BH in killings everyday in the South -East due wilful neglect and abandonment by the last government for the past 16 years of looting and decimation of the country's treasury . PMB met a dead system and it needed prayer, patient, determination and carefulness to resuscitate its breath, arteries, veins, blood vessels and the whole being call Nigeria. Buhari should be allowed to work, should be encouraged to work and should be prayed for. We have no other country but this, men should remove sentiment, For if it matter to tell a lie to save the state - diplomacy said it should be done and let the state of Nigeria be save for future Generation to hold and leave in.

you are just talking blindly. the previous government messed the country up and you are here blaming buhari. you are just being sentimental. its not easy to fix what has been bad. Buhari met a bad and damaged government and he needs time to fix it. and what all nigerians should be doing now is to pray for our president and leader as a whole and not to criticize or be negetive. God bless Nigeria

I generally enjoy your reporting, but the BH is centered in Northern Nigeria. They have had other problems in the oil area, which is far away and the former president bought them off.  I was in that country 2009-2014, and when I arrived oil was at something like $150 a barrel. The elite were rolling in money and Nigeria had the largest number of private jets in Africa and there was actually a Nigerian retail market index in London. Meanwhile, the country had not roads, schools or hospitals. The BH became a lot more active after Good Luck Jonathan ended the fuel subsidy in January 2012. The business about the country using the oil prices to diversify their economy is pure public relations. I expect better reporting from you.

I expect better assessment of that country from u Steve. Ofcourse the country has tons of roads, schools and hospitals. How were they able to get rid of Ebola and polio.. . it was their hospitals. How were they able to have the most educated class of any 3rd world nation.. .. it is their schools and universities. How were u able to go places around when u were in the country Steve.. .. it certainly was not top of a elephant or horse but by roads !!

So stop the fallacy and propaganda Steve.. .. NOW !!

Ofcourse there is youtube to educate the the naïve and foolish to buttress my point !!
